THE PEILSTEINER WATER
flows from 35 million year old rock formations
The spring rises south of Vienna at the foot of the steep-sided Peilstein mountain. During the Celtic period, the mountain was probably sanctified as a Druid altar. Neuhaus im Wienerwald lies in a wooded side valley north of the Triesting valley at 425 meters above sea level, on the road between Nöstach and Weissenbach or Alland and Schwarzensee.
In the immediate vicinity are Schwarzensee am Peilstein, Neuhaus am Peilstein , belonging to the municipality of Weissenbach an der Triesting , and the Baden region in Lower Austria.
The spring, first tapped in 1944, is located in a remote wooded area at the foot of the Peilstein mountain and supplied water to the residents of Neuhaus for decades. A hidden water pipe system is still visible on old maps and is documented in detail. The spring catchment and water pipes are currently undergoing renovation. An announcement will be made as soon as the spring catchment has been modernized according to official guidelines and standards, the renovation is complete, and the water has been tested for food safety.
The spring, which emerges from the craggy rock, is surrounded by 20 hectares of forest. The mountain owes its appearance to the remnants of the ancient Paratethys Ocean at the end of the Eocene epoch , about 35 million years ago. Large fossil ammonites , shells , and snails have been and continue to be found there. During the Celtic period, the mountain was likely sanctified as a Druid altar . From a house at a suitable distance from the spring, the prominent climbing rock can be sighted like a rifle's sight using two burial mounds , which were used as sighting mounds , thus explaining the etymology of the name.
It remains unclear why thousands of cranes have only recently begun to change their migration route, using the Peilstein cliffs as a landmark each year. Since then, they have offered nature lovers a spectacular natural spectacle, both visually and audibly.
The spring has been discharging a constant volume in its natural cycle since our records began.
